Foundation Degree in Learning & Teaching Support
Course Duration: 3 years Part-time, studies based on education and the learning environment.

What is the course about?
The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to succeed in a learning support environment within primary or secondary education, or another appropriate learning environment.
For example: It aims to develop your abilities and extend your range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance within this environment.
Study on the Foundation Degree will involve face to face classes, together with work based and
on-line learning. You should expect to spend an average of 17 hours per week on the coursework.
This combination is designed to help you to fit your study around work and family responsibilities.

Course Structure
Part time (one evening a week at Selby College). Four modules a year are studied.

Year One Modules

Year Two Modules

  • Teaching and Learning Strategies and Learning Support

  • Managing Support and Communication and Negotiation Skills

  • Learning Support in practice (Work-Based Learning)

Year Three Modules


  • The Professional Learning Support Person

  • Assessment in Education - Supporting Pupil Progression

  • Child Protection and the Statutory and Legal framework

  • National Curriculum - Policy and School based delivery.



Learning Methods
A range of teaching and learning methods are used with a work-related, problem solving and research based approach emphasised. The work will be directly related to your practical experience in the learning environment.
Your course tutors will give individual help and support as required.
Reflective practice, assignments, independent study, group work plus important elements of online learning and work-based learning.

Assessment Methods
At the end of each module you will submit a portfolio of work and your assessment will be based on this coursework. You will be given guidance and feedback on each component of your coursework at every stage of your planning, drafting and final submission.
All by written assignment, presentation and contribution to discussions. There are no examinations.

Fieldwork/Practical experience
Work based learning and working within a learning environment at least one day a week equivalence is essential.

Progression Routes
The course can lead to a BA Honours Degree in Pre -16 Learning and Teaching Support and Qualified Teacher Status for Primary Education.
Whatever you do in life, your career opportunities will be improved if you get a Degree or Diploma from a University or College.
