Foundation Degree - Theatre and Performance

Course ID:
PC90082

Academy:
Visual & Performing Arts

Introduction:
The Foundation Degree in Theatre and Performance is a practical course that has been created to provide you with:

  • skills
  • theoretical knowledge
  • critical thinking
  • practical experience

These are all necessary in order to seek a range of possible employment opportunities in the area of contemporary theatre and performance. It is a vocational programme, which looks to build on and progress knowledge, increase your skills base and allow you to further realise your creative potential.

An important focus of the programme is the development of your interpersonal and group-working skills through practical, collaborative projects which reflect professional practice within the industry. Throughout, you are required to be multi-skilled and will gain practical, hands-on experience of many different roles within the industry.

In Year One you will assess your current skills in, and knowledge of contemporary theatre practices, whilst seeking ways to develop these through assignments which incorporate devising, script writing, performing, research, and administration skills.

In Year Two you are required to explore possible future directions for your own career. As such you will be involved in the creation and presentation of theatre for a number of different audiences and purposes, including Theatre-in-Education and / or Community Arts. You will also further develop your skills in contemporary performance practice, including Physical Theatre. Towards the end of Year Two you will work largely independently on a significant performance project which reflects your chosen career path.

A prime aim of the programme is to instil a desire to create work which forces you and your audiences to question preconceptions of theatre. This is as true when creating projects for an educational purpose, as it is when creating cutting-edge performance projects.

The programme provides the opportunity to develop creative, practical, technical and analytical skills in order to produce graduates with the skills, inspiration and confidence to thrive within the industry.

Who is the programme for?
The programme is designed for students with a genuine interest and commitment to contemporary theatre and performance who are looking to develop their creative skills to secure work within the industry or to progress to higher level study. Age is no barrier to success in this field. Those with energy, tenacity and a desire to create and develop contemporary theatre are the type of applicants we are looking for.

There is also a requirement to submit written evaluations of some of the devising and performance work, which will also be assessed. In each year there will also be assessment of research-based written work - in Year Two this will be in the form of a Research Paper which allows you to study an area of contemporary theatre which is of particular interest to you.
