Foundation Degree Tourism and Event Management Overview

The FdA Tourism and Event Management is designed to give students a broad understanding of the principles of tourism and event management, and current professional practice. The programme also includes modules in business and management, which will be essential to any employee entering the sector at graduate level.

A compulsory overseas residential, linked to a range of modules, will take place in your first year of study. This will come with an additional cost, more information will be provided to you at interview. As well as an overseas residential, UK based trips will be included within your study, these may also incur a small additional fee.

This course is validated by Birmingham City University.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 160 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects.
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related subject.
  • Appropriate BTEC Extended Diploma with DMM profile or above, or a National Diploma with a minimum of a DM profile.
  • Other relevant Level 3 qualification, normally at merit grade or above.
  • Alternatively, we will consider substantive experience in a relevant field.

We also normally require GCSE English language and maths at grade C or above: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Business and Management (top-up) award or other programme beyond a Foundation Degree.

This course includes an international residential.

This is a two-year full-time course. The programme operates using a university-style 24-week academic year, which is split into two 12-week semesters. There may be occasional events outside these periods. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and work outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, time-constrained assignments, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements.

What does the course lead to?

Tourism and event management graduates are qualified for a range of careers, including event management and tourism management in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Completed foundation degrees are worth 240 CATS points in line with the UK universities’ credit accumulated transfer scheme.

What can I go on to study?

  • Upon successful completion of the foundation degree, you may wish to progress to the BA (Hons) Business and Management (top-up) award available at the college, or to other appropriate top-up degrees. All top-up awards will be subject to meeting entry requirements.
  • Tourism and event management graduates are qualified for a range of careers, including event management and tourism management in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Specific roles may include hotel event planner, marketing manager, conference centre manager, tourism officer or tour manager. This list is not exhaustive.
