This qualification for IT & computing technicians covers the basics of the computing industry. Six modules are completed over 1 year, four mandatory and two optional. Mandatory modules include Principles of computer science, fundamentals of computer systems, systems security and Business applications of Social Media; optional units can include programming and website design. 30% of work is externally assessed, opportunities exist to progress to an Extended diploma in Computing

What you need to know
How will I study?

The first year course will be split into 4 areas of study for the first year including areas of: • Business and IT, • Gaming (programming), • Networks and Web Design, • Computer Hardware. The second year will be split into 6 areas of study where students will be able to choose any three areas plus a mandatory unit to complete the course of study and specialise in areas that interest them. As English and Maths are important within the IT industry, all students will have a course of study in both English and Maths integrated into their study programme.
How will I be taught?

The course is structured around formal classes, practical work seminars, tutorials and individual tuition. In addition, students will be expected to undertake private study. Lecturers will offer support and guidance in their specialist areas. Principles of Computer Systems and Fundamentals of computer Systems Modules are externally assessed units.
How will I be assessed?

Each of the modules of study are assessed separately by a variety of means ranging from video and audio submissions to presentations and practical work. Each module will be assessed as either a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Two mandatory units are externally assessed
