Who is this course for?
This is a course for young people who have left school without any qualifications. If you have not yet decided which career path to follow, are interested in science and enjoy practical work this course could be for you. If you want to improve your basic skills and prefer being in a college rather than a school you can develop your self-confidence and social skills with this course. You will be taught about Environmental Science through group and individual classes. You will also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities.

What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry qualifications for this course but you must be enthusiastic and willing to work at your own pace. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction where your suitability for the level and type of course you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 2

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 2

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams. You can add and subtract simple numbers and use simple fractions. You can use money, tell the time, measure things and know about squares, triangles and rectangles.


What qualification will I receive?
If you complete all the assignments successfully, you can gain an Edexcel Entry Qualification Award in Skills for Working Life and OCR Key Skills.

Where can it lead?
You will be assisted to progress onto BTEC courses in the College. Careers advice will be available if you wish to join training schemes or seek employment.

What will I study?
You will improve your literacy and numeracy skills and be helped to develop the personal skills necessary for work. You will study units from the vocational area of Science and key skills such as English and Maths. You will also study Information Technology as well as Health and Safety in the workplace.

How will I be taught?
Each group will have a dedicated Learning Support Assistant who will work alongside Course Tutors and provide in-class support. Most of the course involves practical work in the laboratory or visits outside the College. You need to enjoy finding out things for yourself by doing experiments. You will need to be able to talk to your tutor and friends about what is happening during experiments and what you find on your visits.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is ongoing and you will complete assignments which will be sent for external moderation. There are no written examinations.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You have a personal tutor to support you throughout the year. Learning support is also provided.
