Foundation Studies Art and Design BTEC Diploma (18+) - Level 3 Overview

This course will provide you with the opportunity to explore a broad diagnostic programme of art and design subjects.

It will enable you to produce a portfolio of art and design work to support your application to Higher Education courses.

A fast-paced intensive programme which will include a wide range of activities that will develop your manual skills through experimentation and integrated learning. You will learn to appreciate and value the accidental and disruptive incidents which may occur, find your artistic niche and progress onto relevant study or employment.

Entry requirements
  • Minimum age 18+ (at the start of the course)
  • An A Level supported by three GCSEs at grades A*-C or equivalent, including English or a combination of an A Level in Applied Art and Design or AS in Art and Design or a National/Extended Diploma in Art and Design
  • Portfolio of practical art and design work that shows an appropriate standard of ability and commitment

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

How will I be assessed?

Continuous internal assessment will be carried out throughout the course; units 1 to 6 are graded as Pass. The final major project is the culmination of the course and is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What does the course lead to?

You will further develop your conceptual and practical art and design skills to develop and produce a portfolio for your application to Higher Education.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
