Course programme
In the first year you will study a range of topics, including youth culture, health, environmental issues, education and employment. You will take a speaking exam and an exam in listening, reading and writing skills. In the second year you will develop your knowledge of language and culture by studying international events, ethical issues, literature and the arts. Assessment will include an oral exam plus essay writing and translation.
- You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
- In addition, you must have at least grade B in GCSE French. Individual cases will be considered if you have a bilingual background.
International students:
- Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
- IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
Assessment is by a mixture of oral and aural exams, and writing and translation tests. This is spread across the two years of the course. Successful completion of the first year gains you AS Level French. Successful completion of the second gains you an A Level in French.
Taken as one of three A Levels, French can help get you on a Language or Literature course at university or other Higher Education course. Depending on your facility with the language, you may be able to go straight into work as a Translator or Bilingual Copywriter.
