Your Course
This course is designed for students who have no previous knowledge of French. The course is based on a communicative approach and aims to develop the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing in the foreign language. It aims to enable students to understand and use French effectively for purposes of practical communication, to develop some understanding of grammar and to offer insights into the culture of French speaking countries.
This course feeds into Beginners level 2 (summer term 2010) and then Beginners level 3 (autumn term 2010). During the Absolute Beginners course students will take a short internal assessment in reading French. This will help them prepare for the OCR ASSET languages test that will be taken at the end of the first year of study.
"Voila", published by Hodder Education, (ISBN no. 978-0-340-81367-6), will be used as a focus for the lessons, (units 1-4).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will have been given the opportunity to:
· Meet and greet people, formally and informally
· Introduce yourself, (name, age, job, nationality, domicile)
· Describe your family
· Spell in French
· Talk about the weather, months of the year and the seasons
· Describe the local facilities and things to do
· Practice shopping for food and clothes
· Express likes and dislikes
You will also have learnt some basic French grammar, in particular:
· Definite and indefinite articles
· Genders and plurals of nouns
· Regular verbs in the present tense (-er and -re verbs)
· Certain irregular verbs: avoir and tre
· Possessive and demonstrative adjectives
· Position of adjectives
· Negative expressions
· Use of questions
· Some prepositions

Your Tutor
Jenny Fleck has an MA from the University of Cambridge in French and Spanish, plus a PGCE. She has taught French from Beginners level to Advanced level in local secondary schools and was Head of the Spanish Department at the Bishop's Stortford High School. She also has several years of experience teaching adults. She is currently Adult Education Co-Ordinator for Modern Languages here at the College.

Tuition fees: £90
Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.
