This course runs in 2016/17.
French is vitally important in the business world and in international organisations. On this course you will learn all the necessary skills to use French at an advanced level to help enhance your employment prospects.
This course aims to provide you with a real understanding of recent social, political, business and cultural developments in France and the francophone world. You can study French with Spanish, Business or International Relations.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- a year studying or working in a French-speaking country, which provides you with an international experience that many businesses are looking for when employing a graduate;
- student exchange agreements with universities in Paris, Lille, Tours, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Dijon, Metz and Strasbourg;
- use of modern technologies, such as busuu and Duolingo, to maintain links with native speakers of the language that you are studying;
- experienced teaching staff who bring professional or research expertise in to their teaching;
- teaching about French culture and society that gives you specific applied language skills which will be relevant to the workplace;
- the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by mentoring pupils and shadowing French teachers (subject to application).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This course focuses on developing the four major language skills of listening, speaking, reading and
writing in French.
In addition, the course covers sociolinguistics, specialist translation, contemporary French culture and society, and the language of business.
In all years you will study different areas of the French language and will apply this to research projects. Depending on which route you wish to follow, you will choose from topics in French Culture and Society, the Francophone World, Translation and French Language in the media and the workplace.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Your course will be based on a series of mini-lectures and task-based activities such as translation from and into French, listening and grammar exercises, oral presentations and summary writing from written and audio/visual sources. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
