French AS

Your Course
This course aims to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the foreign language in a variety of registers. It provides a suitable foundation for further study to A2 level and also in the area of languages for business. It also offers a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not wish to progress to further study in the subject. You should expect to do 4 hours of homework per week, 2 hours set by the teacher and 2 hours of private study which will monitor through the use of a language diary.
The library houses a large variety of Modern Languages resources. You will also be able to access the Modern languages homepages on the IT network. Application for computer access is required.
This course will cover the following topic areas:
· Media: television, advertising, communication technology
· Popular culture: cinema, music, fashion trends
· Healthy living/lifestyle: sport/excercise, health and wellbeing, holidays
· Family/relationships: relationships within the family, friendships, marriage/partnerships
The course will follow the new AS specification of the AQA Examination Board:
· Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing. Retrieving and conveying information on the basis of printed and recorded French material. Time: 2 hours. Weighing 70%.
· Unit 2: Speaking - Discussion and Conversation of the AS topic areas. Time: 15 minutes. Weighing 30%
Learning Outcomes
During the course you will have the opportunity to:
· Develop a firm foundation, revising the grammar that you have met at GCSE, developing independent study, building up your skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) beyond GCSE standard and developing your ability to commit vocabulary and grammar to memory.
· Extend your use and understanding of a wide range of vocabulary and language registers to allow you to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in French through both the spoken and written word, using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language.
· Develop critical insights into and contact with the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where French is spoken.
Your Tutor
Patrick De Backer is a graduate of Queens' College Cambridge. He studied politics in Paris and completed a PGCE. He has taught French and Russian at A level and been an examiner in both. He was Head of Languages in two local schools. He especailly enjoys the role of 'animateur' at evening classes.

Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.

Please note that there are no classes during half term Monday 15th - Friday 19th February 2010 unless otherwise stated.
