Course Aims:
For those who have a GCSE or equivalent experience in a language but who wish to consolidate before moving on to AS level, this 23 week OCN course could well be suitable.
Students on this course will have studied languages for at least 3 years and, within the year, will study general and cultural aspects of a relevant country through the medium of the foreign language. At the end of the year, they should be able to communicate, in the target language, an awareness of issues and the cultural identity and heritage of a particular country.
Course Content:
Topics studied can be negotiated with the tutor but at least two of the following will be studied in some depth and a number of others through natural interest and conversation and discussion in class.

* Technology and inventions
* Fashion and design
* Education
* Health
* Transport
* Tourism
* Cuisine
* Agriculture and industry

Students can Progress onto AS or other higher level courses

Open College Network (OCN)
Exam:
Assessment will be through portfolio, project work and tasks relevant to the topics, demonstrating competence particularly in speaking and listening. You will need to
* Show understanding of a topic chosen by listening to material in the foreign language from four different sources, sometimes for the gist and sometimes for specific detail
* Speak for about 6-7 minutes in the language on at least two topics. This could be done through presentation, discussion or role play.
* Show understanding of common sentence structures and use them accurately and confidently
* Show understanding of more complicated language and use it with reasonable accuracy
* Use verbs, phrases and arguments to convey your ideas and meaning effectively.
The course aims to develop further confidence in the language and communicate an interest in and a desire to research cultural and social aspects of a particular country or society. Above all, it encourages the enjoyment of exploring and using language accurately.
