About this course
You should have a keen interest in design and have experience of producing your own artwork. If you do not have a GCSE grade C in art or a DT related subject, you should bring a portfolio of work to your interview.

Design and the skills it teaches are important and highly valued by employers and HE institutions alike, whether you are looking for a career in the creative industries or a more traditional career path.
You will research and develop creative 3D design solutions using a variety of modern techniques, materials and state of the art manufacturing processes in dedicated well-resourced studio environments. The emphasis is on design, promoting creativity and innovation. The work of existing designers is explored through analysis and trips to museums and exhibitions.
What will I study?
You will build a quality portfolio of design work and manufacture creative design solutions.You will have the opportunity to use computer aided design packages and modern manufacturing methods to design specific products and architectural models. You will also build your skills in more traditional media, such as sketching, rendering and 3D model making.
AS: In the first year you will look at the work of famous designers/architects and design movements. You will start to build a portfolio of design work and have the opportunity to produce a range of 3D outcomes using a wide variety of materials and processes.
A2: In the second year you will build on the knowledge gained during your AS. You will continue to develop your portfolio, working more independently on projects of your choice and produce a more considered 3D design, using various materials and advanced processes.
How will I be assessed?
AS: 2 coursework projects, plus 5 hours of work under timed conditions.
A2: 2 coursework projects, a written personal study and 15 hours of work under timed conditions.
What can I do next?
There is a large range of associated courses running at Universities and Colleges around the country, covering specialisms such as Product Design, Interior Design, and Architecture etc. This can lead to a career working within the creative industries or an associated sector.
