Description of course:
This is an academic and challenging course for students who love reading and who are prepared to look indepth at the way writers and speakers achieve their purposes. Careful analysis is the key to success and students who embark on this subject should be aware that a love of language and a curiosity to find out how it is used in difference situations are vital if they are to enjoy the course. At AS students will study the spoken word and 3 literary texts, both modern and classical, examining how speakers and writers convey meaning and attitudes to a variety of audiences. Grammar and appropriate linguistic and literary terminology will be studied to enable students to comment knowledgably on given texts. At A2 the analytical skills acquired in the first year will be extended through further study of texts and comparative analysis.

Method of assessment:
AS: Examination only A2: Coursework 40% Examination 60%

Progression opportunities and careers:
This is a very useful subject for progression to any study of humanities subjects in Higher Education. The skills of analysis, evaluation and interpretation will be useful in a wide range of careers.

Entry requirements:

Specific entry requirements:
GCSE English Language or English Literature at grade B or above.

Advanced Level GCE courses are very different from GCSEs. Students need to be prepared to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and willingness to work. The number of students, and the wide range of schools they come from to study at Advanced Level GCE, ensures stimulating work and discussion groups.
