Why should I study A2 Level Biology?
Gain an understanding of how Biology influences our everyday lives in many ways - from applications in industry and medicine to advances in technology and appreciation of the diversity of our ecosystems. There will be opportunities to develop practical skills and also to discuss ethical and moral issues surrounding this exciting and fascinating subject.
The course will enable students to

  • Study a Science or Biology degree at University
  • Enter Science or Biology based employment

What will be studied on the course?
Students will cover three modules, all of which are compulsory

  • Unit 4: Populations and Environment.
  • Unit 5: Control in cells and in organisms.
  • Unit 6: Investigative and Practical Skills.

In recent years students have also enjoyed study visits to Northumbria University and The Centre for Life and investigative studies in eco-environments such as St Mary's Island.

When does the course start and how long does it last?
The course starts in September and will finish in June

What qualifications are needed to do the course?

  • Learners are expected to have a minimum of a grade D at AS level Biology

How will the learner be assessed?
Units 4 and 5 will be assessed by a final exam lasting 1 hour and 30 min and 2 hours and 15 min respectively at the end of the course. Unit 6 is practically based. The student is involved in designing their own experiment. This unit will be both internally assessed by the lecturer, and also by external moderation.

How much will the course cost?
Textbooks are available from the LRC free of charge. All safety equipment and lab coats are provided by the department. You may be asked to cover costs of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course.

What progression routes are available?
Successful completion of an A level in Biology may lead to:

  • Entry onto a Science or Biology based degree
  • Entry into Science or Biology based employment
