Why should I study A2 Level Mathematics?
Studying A2 Maths will provide the learner with increased problem solving skills and enable the learner to acquire more knowledge about Mathematical concepts and techniques. It is a challenging subject which will improve powers of logical thought. It will enable the learner to progress to:
- study Mathematics to degree level
- study other subjects where Mathematical skills are used i.e. Sciences, Engineering, Psychology, Geography etc.
What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study 3 units which are
- C3: Pure Mathematics 3 This unit builds on the skills acquired in the C1 and C2 units at AS level. It includes algebraic fractions, functions, the exponential and log functions, numerical methods, transforming graphs of functions, trigonometry, further trig identities and differentiation
- C4: Pure Mathematics 4 This unit also builds on the skills acquired in the C1, C2 and C3 units. It includes partial fractions; coordinate geometry, binomial expansions, differentiation, vectors and integration
- M1: Mechanics 1 This unit is based on solving Physics and Engineering type problems. It includes mathematical methods in mechanics, vectors and their application in mechanics, kinematics of a particle, statics of a particle, dynamics of a particle and moments
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
A pass at AS Maths and also passes in the C1 and C2 units at AS level.
How will the learner be assessed?
The course is assessed by 3 x 1½ hr externally assessed exams, normally taken in May / June.
How much will the course cost?
Textbooks relating to the course are available from our Learning Resource Centre. You will need a basic scientific calculator.
What progression routes are available?
