ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have met one of the following entry requirements:

5 GCSEs at grades A - C including English Language at grade C;or
Students who achieved at least a merit in GNVQ or BTEC First Diploma qualifications alongside at least a grade C in English GCSE, will be considered for AS levels on a case by case basis.

The following special requirements apply for Maths AS level:
GCSE Maths grade B including a pass in a Croydon College entry assessment in Algebra which will be set during Induction week.

The algebra assessment includes simple equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, multiplying brackets, factorising, quadratic equations (by factorising and formula), simplifying and re-arranging expressions.

It is important to note that students with a B at GCSE Maths who do not achieve a pass in the Department's Algebra assessment will be guided onto an alternative programme.

Students who have achieved AS qualifications and wish to study their A2s at Croydon Sixth Form College are welcome, provided that
a) they can produce a positive reference from their previous school or college; and
b) the specification they studied for AS level is compatible with the specification at Croydon College.(Advice on this should be sought from the College at the time of application although there is usually no difficulty.)

Students qualify for A2 subjects provided they have achieved at least an E at AS level. The exception is ICT which requires a grade D.

All full-time students are required to take a computer based multiple choice 'initial assessment test' before enrolment in literacy and numeracy. A Level 2 pass in literacy is normally required for all subjects. A Level 2 numeracy pass is normally required for Science and Maths subjects.

This subject covers Core (Pure) Mathematics, Mechanics and/or Statistics. Core Maths expands on algebra and trigonometry covered in GCSE and covers new areas such as calculus and numerical analysis. Mechanics covers the interaction of force, mass and energy. Statistics involves the analysis and
interpretation of data including various distributions, significance testing and correlation. The introduction of Decision Mathematics units is currently under review.

The AS level is completed with two units of Core Mathematics, C1 and C2 and one unit of an application, either Statistics, S1 or Mechanics, M1.

C1: Algebra and Functions; co-ordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; differentation; integration (ISBN 978-0-435519-10-0).

C2: Algebra and Functions; co-ordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration (ISBN 978-0-435519-11-7).

And either:

M1: Mathematical models in mechanics; vectors in mechanics; kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line; statics of a particle; moments(ISBN 978-0-435519-16-2).

or;

SI: Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; the normal distribution (ISBN 978-0-435519-12-4).

A2
The A level is completed with a further two Core Mathematics units, C3 and C4 and one further application unit M2 or S2.

C3: Algebra and Functions, Trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms differentiation, numerical methods (ISBN 978-0-435519-09-4).

C4: Algebra and Functions, coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation, integration (ISBN 978-0-435519-07-0).

M2: Kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; centre of mass; work and energy; collisions; statics of rigid bodies (ISBN 978-0-435519-17-9).

The College offers a wide range of AS level subjects to choose from - so students can pick, with support from college staff, the combination that best suits their needs. Most students will start by taking between 3 - 4 AS levels before deciding which subjects to continue with in order to gain the full A level. The main things students should think about when deciding which subjects to take are their interests, what they are good at and what they might need for employment or progressing onto Higher Education in the future. Students on the AS/A level programme are supported by a strong tutorial element including careers education and the development of their personal and study skills.

AS or A2 subjects (usually just one) may be taken by suitably qualified BTEC students, subject to timetabling constraints.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
AS and A Levels are a traditional route into University for 16-18 year olds. They are also seen by employers as indicators of a potential employee's intelligence, maturity and self organisation skills.

Most A Level students progress into full-time employment or onto Higher Education.
