WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
The purpose of this course is to prepare you for entry into university to study a Diploma or Degree in Nursing, Midwifery and other health care professions. You will be working at A-level standard, studying specific subject options as well as learning essential skills to enable you to succeed in higher education. It is aimed at mature learners and is a nationally recognised course.
The qualification is welcomed by Higher Education institutions including local universities: DeMontfort, Leicester and Northampton.
All applicants are advised to check with HE admission Tutors, regarding medical problems, criminal records and the courses minimum science requirements.
Admission tutors in Higher Education prefer 16-18 year olds to study A Levels rather than an Access course.

WHAT DO I NEED?
WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
You will need to attend classes for approximately 17 hours per week. In addition you are advised to spend 10 - 15 hours per week on coursework at home or in college. Your classroom hours are usually between 9.30 am and 3.00 pm.

This course may be studied over 2 years and you would attend college for approximately 8 hours per week.. You would also need to spend 5-7 hours per week on coursework. (This option is more expensive see main Access to HE leaflet for part-time costs).

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
You will study a combination of compulsory and optional units.

Compulsory:

Core Skills (level 3) - includes study skills, research methods, applying for HE, presentation skills, critical reading

Information Technology (level 2)
GCSE Mathematics (level 2)
GCSE English (level 2)

(There maybe some examination fees to pay for GCSE entry) If you need both the GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English you should take the Access to Higher Education part time course over two years. It isn't possible to complete them both alongside Access to Nursing in one year in the daytime timetable.

Usual options (level 3) are

Biology
Nursing
Psychology

WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
You will need to obtain a minimum of 60 credits, 45 of which must be at Level 3 (A Level equivalent). On successful completion you will gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma accredited by Open College Network East Midlands Region.

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?
3l109-09 Course fees 0 16-18 year olds, 352(19) 19 years and over

Course fees are payable on enrolment. Costs shown in brackets are for those on income-based benefits. Refunds are not normally available.

WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS ARE THERE?
