Applied Science (Forensic Science) First Diploma
This practical course develops students' science skills and interest in the subject through the teaching of practical application and related theory. Students will acquire knowledge of basic scientific principles and relate these to realistic workplace situations. You will undertake units of study relating to topics in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The core units are highly vocational in content, providing the fundamental skills and knowledge required for progression to higher courses or into the workplace. A BTEC First Diploma is an ideal course of study for recent school leavers with predominantly lower-grade GCSEs who do not meet the entry requirements for a Level 3 programme but who wish to continue their education in a specific vocational area. Directly equivalent to four GCSEs at grade C or above, they offer a good opportunity to acquire transferable skills for employment and for progression to a Level 3 programme, such as a BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject.

Course Content:
The qualification consists of six units: two core units which all students take and four specialist units which allow students to study particular subjects in greater depth. Core units: These units are compulsory for all students.

  • Specialist units: Four of the following units will also be studied:

    • Chemistry applications
    • Physical science applications
    • Biological systems
    • Forensic science applications
    • Science in medicine
    • Working with Science
    • Anatomy
    • & Physiology

    • Plants and food

    Students who have not achieved a GCSE at grade C or above in English and Maths will have the option to retake these exams.

    Edexcel.
    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants should have one of the following:

    • /Foundation level at Merit or Distinction
    • An appropriate standard of literacy and numeracy and related interests



    Entry Process:
    All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts.

    Assessment:
    Assessment is continuous throughout the course and will consist of a variety of assignments involving practical tasks and written work.

    Progression Routes:
    Successful students may progress to a Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC National Diploma in Forensic Science, Laboratory and Industrial Science, Health Studies, IT, Electronics or Engineering.

    Career Options:
    With further training or study successful students can progress to a career in a science discipline, such as analytical science, education, environmental science, food technology, forensic science, materials testing, quality control and research.
