About this course

Students will require 5 GCSE passes at Grades C or above one of which needs to be in an Art and Design related subject. In addition, tutors will require a view of relevant GCSE Art and Design work/personal portfolio at interview.

Art and Design AS and A Level (Level 3)
Course Content
The AS course introduces students to a broad range of disciplines including: Drawing and Painting; Printmaking, Graphic design and Sculpture.
Practical work is supported by theoretical study to improve students' understanding of the visual arts and visual communication.
The A2 course builds upon the AS level and students will be required to present an informed project investigating visual art. Study units include:
  • Materials, Techniques and Processes of Art Disciplines;
  • Creating and Presenting Visual Art for Public Audiences;
  • Historical and Contemporary Role of Visual Art.

Study will include research into the work of artists and designers, contextual influences upon art and design as well as practical skills. The practical workshop sessions will build students' abilities in using 2D and 3D media through application of techniques and processes. Students will have use of printmaking, drawing and painting studios as well as sculpture studios and our Apple Mac design suite.
This course is equivalent to 40-120 UCAS points
Teaching/Assessment
The coursework units will introduce students to the work of artists and designers, this will include visits to Galleries and Exhibitions. Students are required to use this stimulus to develop project ideas which will be explored in a range of 2D and 3D media. The qualification requires indepth documentation of the creative process through exciting sketchbooks.
Each year learners will study 2 units of coursework and 1 unit of exam which is sat in May. Both the AS and A Level have a set exam paper from which students can select their preferred theme.
Progression
This course can lead to:
Higher Education entry including Fine Art, Graphics and 3D studies at Foundation level, HND or Degree.
Employment in the creative industries that require Art and Design knowledge and skills.
Additional Information
Students will need to invest in sketchbooks and basic art and design materials most large scale materials are provided for. Trips will need to be supplemented by students.
