Course Overview A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
Qualification gained: BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design
Course Content: All students take the four core units: 2D and 3D Communication, Vocational Context, Explore and Develop Ideas, Produce Outcome. Students also take two specialist units: Working to Photography Briefs, Working to 3D Design Briefs.
Work Experience: There is no work experience on this course.
Course Assessment: This is a practical course with assessment throughout the year. You will produce a portfolio of work which is assessed against the grading criteria for the six units. Each of the criteria will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. At the end of the course all of the unit grades count towards overall achievement of the qualification.
Progression: A BTEC First Diploma provides a good grounding to go on to a more advanced course such as a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in: 3D Design/ Design/ Design Crafts/ Fashion and Clothing/ Fine Art/ Graphic Design/ Multimedia/ Photography/ Textiles.
Homework: You will only need to do half an hour to one hour per evening.
Additional Costs: This can be an expensive course. Be prepared to buy materials all year for your work and you will need to pay for visits etc. You may be able to apply for the student fund and/or EMA.

- Part Time Course Fee Relate to Year 1 course fees only. Two year course fees will have an additional course fee for the second year; these fees are subject to confirmation annually.

Entry Requirement
You will normally need to have at least one of the following: A BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma in a related subject, A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades D or above. Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications. You will be taught the basics of drawing, ceramics, model making and photography as a part of this course. While no previous experience is necessary it is desirable that you have at least basic skills in one of these areas.
