Entry Requirements
You should have GCSE grade C or above in Art or Textiles.

Course content
A2 and AS Level Art can be considered an extension of GCSE, and will build on the skills and understanding you have already acquired. The courses are more demanding, however, enabling you to explore the subject in greater depth in order to achieve a mature response and a fuller understanding of artistic skills and concepts.
Double Art
It is possible to choose a Fine Art option and Textiles to gain 2 separate AS/A Level qualifications.
AS: Year 1
The AS year is broadly-based with the emphasis on experimentation and exploration of materials, techniques and processes. Projects are undertaken which involve research and recording, followed by the development of ideas through a range of media. You will be required to engage with the works of artists and designers. This encourages a critical response and enables you to analyse the way you work. During the first few weeks you will follow an induction period that will enable you to explore the role of drawing and gain an understanding of the core elements and requirements of the subject.
Fine Art: Painting and Sculpture
You will have an opportunity to explore and experiment with a wide range of painting and drawing techniques and processes. Such materials as charcoal, pastel, acrylics and inks will be used to produce both observational and expressive work. You will be encouraged to combine materials and techniques to produce work of an individual nature.
Three-dimensional work will be produced using a variety of techniques: construction, modelling, casting and carving. You will be able to use such materials as wood, plaster, metal and clay and explore their possibilities to create three-dimensional forms.
Textiles: Printed, dyed and constructed
This course will provide you with the opportunity to explore and experiment with colour, shape, texture and pattern through a range of textile processes. These will include batik, screen and transfer printing, embroidery, quilting, felt-making and fabric manipulation. You will design and produce work of a decorative or practical nature ranging from fashion fabrics to wall hangings.
A2: Year 2
In the A2 year you will focus in depth on your AS area of study. You will build on the skills and knowledge you have already acquired and you will be encouraged to develop an independent and creative approach to the subject, to produce personal work of a high quality.
The emphasis is on depth of study and you are expected to adopt an individual approach, planning your own project work on themes of personal significance. You will research your ideas from a range of resource material and then experiment and develop these ideas to produce fully resolved art or design works. You will continue your involvement with artists and designers work through a related personal study.

How Will I Be Assessed?
AS units (at the end of year one)
Unit 1: Coursework portfolio - Candidates produce a portfolio of work where the focus is on exploration, research and the acquisition of techniques and skills. This unit will include planning and preparation in the form of sketchbooks, mounted boards with related contextual studies and final pieces.
Unit 2: Controlled Assignment (5 hours) - In response to set questions, you will research and develop your ideas. You will produce planning sheets before the exam, and during the 5 hour exam you will produce a considered piece of work.
A2 units (at the end of year two)
Unit 3: Personal Investigation and a coursework unit similar to the AS one - Students submit a major project of personal significance that demonstrates further development of skills and understanding incorporated within the major project is a related personal study of 1000 -3000 words where students research and demonstrate critical contextual connections between artists, designers and craftspeople and their own project work.
Unit 4: Controlled Test - In response to set questions you will explore your ideas through various media. You will produce planning sheets before the test, and during the 15-hour exam you will produce a fully resolved final piece of work.

What Could I Do Next?
There is a wide range of careers in Art and Design including: teaching, museum and gallery work, textile and fashion design, spatial design (interior and architectural), film, television, animation, special effects, costume and theatre set design, multimedia and web design. The next step is often a pre-BA Foundation course. This is a diagnostic year which prepares you for entry onto a specialist Art and Design degree course. Some students with clear career aims can move straight onto a degree or Higher National Diploma on leaving Bexhill College.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
The course involves visits to museums and art galleries. Costs may vary. You will also need to buy sketchbooks, a portfolio and brushes as well as some fabrics (approx 20.00 per year). These can be bought at our Art Department shop at reduced rates. You may also need to contribute toward the cost of unusual or large quantities of materials you may use in your projects.
