If you are interested in investigating the nuts and bolts of how language works and the impact of language use on individuals and identity or societies as a whole, then this course will suit you. You will learn how to use knowledge and understanding to debate the impact of language on our understanding of ourselves, each other and the world.
AS: Year 1
Unit 1: Seeing Through Language - Alongside the concepts of audience, purpose, field and genre you will undertake study of the modes of language, exploring how language is used in written, spoken and electronic forms. You will also study a language issue: Language Development. This looks at how children acquire language and how this is linked with cognition.
Unit 2: Representation and Language - In this coursework unit you will develop your ability to write for specific audiences and purposes and explore the ideas of representation and ideology. You will develop your ability to use linguistic frameworks to analyse and interpret language in use.
A2: Year 2
Unit 3: Language Explorations - You will look at the wider study of language in society. This unit places language in geographical, social and temporal contexts. You will study how and why language changes and varies and will learn to describe, explain and evaluate variation in both spoken and written language, showing the effects of historical, geographical, social and personal factors.
Unit 4: Language Investigations and Interventions - You will learn how to undertake independent investigation and analysis of spoken language and will further develop your own use of language in the production of a text which participates in a topical language debate.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Unit 1: Seeing Through Language - A written paper with two questions lasting 2 hours
Unit 2: Representation and Language - Coursework consisting of one investigation and one production task plus a commentary (2000-2500 words)
Unit 3: Language Explorations - A written paper with two questions lasting 2 hours 30 minutes
Unit 4: Language Investigations and Interventions - Coursework consisting of one investigation and one intervention task (3000-3750 words)
