Environmental Studies AS/A2

Entry Requirements
It is expected that most students will have obtained a grade C or better in GCSE Science and preferably a C grade in GCSE Maths. Students must be interested in science and the environment.

Course content
Environmental Studies relates to the whole planet and so involves biological organisms, our physical environment and us, as well as the interactions between these. Conservation and environmental ethics, social and economic factors, are all part of Environmental Studies. The course focuses on understanding the processes with ecosystems and how we work within the constraints of available natural resources whilst protecting them for the future. This is increasingly important in todays world to help us move towards a more sustainable future. We need to manage our environment more effectively in order to avoid problems such as global warming, deforestation, food, water and energy shortages. Environmental Studies contains content from biology, chemistry, geography, geology and physics and is made up of the following units:
AS: Year 1
The Living Environment - ecosystems and wildlife conservation.
The Physical Environment - atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.
A2: Year 2
Energy resources and environmental pollution.
Biological resources and sustainability.

How Will I Be Assessed?
The course is examined in modules, two of which are
for AS and a further two for A2.

What Could I Do Next?
Environmental Studies/Science is offered as a single subject or joint degree in many universities and the AS or A Level is also useful as an extra based subject. Environmental Scientists are employed in both governmental and private sector positions and the current job market is experiencing rapid growth because of increasing environmental concern and legislation. Environmental Scientists are employed in areas such as wildlife conservation, water, food and energy resource management, academic research and teaching.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
All course materials will be provided. During the course students will attend a number of field days which will incur expenses. There may also be an opportunity to attend an optional field trip to Morocco.
Additional Information
Students who wish to complement their Biology, Geography and/or Geology course may find this course useful in addition to those students intending to follow careers in environment management.
