Course description
Economics is based upon the central problem that, while human wants are infinite (they never end) the resources we have to satisfy them are running out. This makes Economics one of the most important studies in the world today. Everyone is probably aware that the industrialised nations attempts to satisfy the wants of their peoples have led to the destruction of rain forests, pollution of the seas and global warming - things that threaten our very existence. For this reason a knowledge of economics is vital in the education of all people.
The study of economics seeks to understand how resources can â€-best†be used for the good of society. However different people have very different ideas about what is â€-bestâ€
and this leads to interesting discussions. For example, do you agree with people who argue that the unemployed are lazy and that their benefits should be cut to encourage
them to work, or those who say that benefits are vital to prevent people living in poverty? Can you explain why people doing vital jobs like nurses earn £300 per week while
footballers earn £60,000 per week? (Is this right or is it an outrage?)
Knowledge of economics is invaluable for many jobs and professions and with the current shortage of economists for many jobs and professions people with an understanding of economics are obtaining interesting and well paid jobs. It is also a qualification highly thought of by universities.
The course is modular which means that you can gain marks towards your final grade as you progress through the course. Successfully passing 2 modules at AS Level and 2 at A2 will convert to an Advanced GCE.
