About the course:

Economics is the study of how households, firms and governments relate to each other in the process of producing and distributing goods and services. We look closely at both theory and application. You will look at a wide range of topical issues including:

- The role of governments
- Economic policy
- Economic efficiency
- Inflation
- Unemployment
- Markets & Market Failure.
The first year of the course is the Advanced Subsidiary. This is taught in two units. Students who pass these exams can go forward to the second year, which takes studies to the advanced level. We invsetigate in more detail how firms and markets operate and are affected by circumstances, and the place of the UK in the world economy. Again there are two units and two examinations. There is no externally assessed coursework. It should be noted that Economics studies relationships between institutions, and summarises the behaviour of institutions such as firms by constructing simple models containing variables such as price. By the end of the course students are expected to be able to give their own opinions on how society might adjust economic policy in order to improve the working of the economy. By contrast, Business Studies focuses on the internal working of firms and how their individual performance can be improved.

Assessment:
The AS Level is assessed by two 1 hour external written examinations taken at the end of the first academic year. The A2 level is assessed by two 2 hour written examinations. These are taken at the end of the second year.

After the course:
You can progress onto the A2 level.
