Mathematics with Further Mathematics AS/A2

Entry Requirements
This course is designed for the more able mathematicians, and we therefore expect an A or A* grade in Mathematics GCSE. It is particularly useful for students wishing to study a mathematically based subject at university.

Course content
In the first year, seven modules will be studied:
Core Mathematics 1 to 4 (C1-4): which cover the topics Algebra & functions, Co-ordinate geometry, Sequences and series, Differentiation, Integration, Trigonometry, Exponentials and logarithms, Numerical methods and Vectors.
3 Applications Modules - see below for more details.
In the second year of the course, students can opt for a number of possible combinations of modules. The modules studied to achieve an A level in Further Mathematics are:
Further Pure 1 to 3 (FP1-3): which cover the topics Series, Complex numbers, Numerical solution of equations, Coordinate systems, Matrix algebra, Proof, Inequalities, Differential Equations, Vectors, Hyperbolic functions, Differentiation and Integration.
3 different Applications Modules - see below for more details.
During the two years the following applications modules are studied:
Statistics 1 and 2 (S1-2): which cover Statistical models, Data representation and summary, Probability, Correlation and regression, Discrete and continuous random variables, Normal, Poisson and Binomial distributions, Sampling and Hypothesis tests.
Decision Mathematics 1 and 2 (D1-2): which cover Algorithms, Route inspection, Critical path analysis, Matchings, Linear programming, Transportation problems, Allocation problems, Travelling salesman. Game theory, Dynamic programming and Flows in Networks.
Mechanics 1 and 2 (M1-2): which cover Mechanical models, Vectors, Kinematics, Particle dynamics, Statics of particles and rigid bodies, Moments, Centres of mass, Work and energy and Collisions.
Support may be available for independent study of M3.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Each module is assessed by a ninety minute examination, with questions of varying length and difficulty. These are taken at various points during the course, and each module carries equal weighting towards the final award. An AS consists of three modules and an A2 consists of six modules.

What Could I Do Next?
A Further Mathematics qualification of at least AS Level is desirable for many careers and a number of Higher Education courses, including Engineering, Mathematics and Physics.

Are There Any Special Expenses?
All students are expected to provide a graphical calculator and have access to a computer outside of college.
