PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
What can I expect on the course?
The course is designed to rigorously develop the necessary skills for a career in the entertainment industry, developing
the skills associated with design for production, set, costume and lighting in general terms for theatre, film and
television and associated industries. You can therefore expect to be introduced, through experience and teaching, to a
range of skills relevant to design, craft and the business of creative theatre and film. You will develop this into areas of personal interest and eventually specialise in one or
more of the design areas which make up the discipline: set, costume and make-up, and lighting and sound.

How is the course structured?
The course has a modular structure. There are eight standard modules per academic year. Each module covers a specific area of learning, such as production and performance for example.
Increasingly complex module briefs are presented throughout the course; the first year presents fundamental studies,
the second towards professional practice and the third research and development.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is an important part of learning and so we use a variety of assessment methods, such as verbal and visual presentation of practical work and submission of reports and diaries. We use formative assessment to give feedback when you need it during your project, and summative assessment or
final feedback followed by a mark and grade to help you in your next project.

What are the career opportunities?
The course offers training in the practical creative areas of theatre and film production and this will make it possible
for you to enter a number of associated industries (such as TV, event management, promotion) across set and props, costume
and wardrobe and lighting and sound at a junior level and the opportunity to quickly progress up the ladder.

There are three option pathways within the Honours Degree course which can be followed from the beginning of the course.
The following pathways are taught by practising professionals who regularly contribute to the ongoing development
of the syllabus and curriculum.

Costume Construction
The Costume Construction pathway concentrates on the skills associated with the design and construction of a range of
period costumes, and costume sourcing hire for the theatre, film, television and associated industries;

Lighting
The Lighting pathway concentrates on the skills associated with lighting design and the preparation of the lighting rig
in a range of situations for the theatre, exhibition, film, television and associated industries. This option will also include the City and Guilds Electrical Installation
qualification which will commence in year two of study.*

Scenic Arts
The Scenic Arts pathways encompasses properties, scenic painting and set construction. It concentrates on the theatre, exhibition, film, television and associated industries.

The course is geared towards the creative and visual elements of performance including puppetry and mask.

In Year 1 you will develop a solid grounding of technical skills and an underpinning awareness of contextual issues, along with
effective ways of working to integrate the two.

Year 2 provides you with the opportunity to develop and apply specialist skills to personally generated projects.

Year 3 requires the development of a personal creative philosophy to enable you to generate work of a professional
standard within your specialist field.

The course offers you the opportunity to acquire the appropriate technical and practical skills needed to access a range of career opportunities or Postgraduate study.

Relevant areas of industry include:
Costume Design
Exhibition Design
Lighting/Sound Design
Mask/Prop Construction
Set Design
TV/Film/Video Design

Currently, graduates from the course are working successfully in the industry as designers and makers for companies such as Punchdrunk, Polka Theatre, Wiz TV, English National Opera,
