Is it right for me?
If you are looking for good knowledge and practical understanding of the care and needs of animals, either as pets or in the workplace, then this is the course for you. Successful completion of the course will prepare you for employment in a variety of animal industries, enable you to progress further in education (for example on the Introduction to Animal Care course), or train under an NVQ level apprenticeship scheme. This course would ideally suit applicants who have achieved a Level 1 qualification, and those who would benefit from the additional support incorporated within the course.

What qualifications will I need?
Four GCSEs at Grade D to G or a BTEC Level 1 Introductory Certificate, Introductory Diploma, NVQ level 1 Landbased Operations or e2e. A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to four GCSEs at grades D to G. A genuine interest in animals and enthusiasm for working in animal care.

What will I be learning about?
  • Principals of animal housing, feeding, health and welfare, handling and care for a range of animals
  • Understanding of animal establishments and their functions
  • Understanding of the importance of good husbandry
  • Discussion of legislation relating to animal establishments and care
  • Insight into conservation and improvement of British animal habitats
  • Level 1 NPTC Landbased Operations Certificate
  • Functional Skills to be delivered after initial diagnosis
  • One day per week work experience is an essential requirement

What is involved?
A three unit introductory vocational qualification that focuses on the aspects that will enable a learner to progress well in a work environment and provides a wide range of work experience relating to animal care industries. The BTEC First Certificate also offers a focused qualification for learners wishing to follow a shorter programme of study that is already related to an aspect of employment they wish to move into.

Where will it take me?
Junior levels within the Animal Care industry, eg animal care assistant, kennel assistant, working within a pet shop. Progression onto higher level courses such as Introduction to Animal Care.

What else does the course include?
City and Guilds Land based operations (NVQ1)

What materials are required?
Practical clothing (polo shirts and sweatshirts available at College) is necessary at all times to include steel toe'capped safety boots, waterproofs, overalls. Basic stationery. Tetanus protection is recommended.

What is next?
BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care.
NVQ Level 2 in Animal Care, Equine or Agriculture.
Apprenticeships in Animal Care, Equine or Agriculture.

How will I be assessed?
A range of continuous assessments, including written assignments and practical tests.
