Course Overview This course is designed as a progression from NVQ level 2. It offers the opportunity to develop a wider range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge for a career in Beauty Therapy and related disciplines. At the end of the course the successful student will be awarded the VTCT level 3 NVQ in Beauty Therapy. This qualification will lead them to a career in a thriving industry. Students need to be prepared to have all treatments themselves as initially students work on each other whilst training. The course has one late evening 5 - 8pm built into the timetable.

Qualification gained: The qualification is validated by V.T.C.T (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) and successful students gain an NVQ level 3 in Beauty Therapy.

Course Content: The NVQ level 3 programme includes: Client care, consultation and diagnostic techniques,Salon management, Health and Safety, Body Massage, Mechanical and Electrical Body Therapy, Mechanical and Electrical Facial Therapy, Self tanning treatment, Electrical Epilation and Blend techniques. The course contains a management unit which requires management duties within the salon. These days may not be on the days the students are timetabled to be in College, but as a mandatory unit within the qualification attendance is compulsory. During the course leading manufacturers will visit the College to give lectures and demonstrations on up to date products, treatments and techniques. A fee may be payable for some if a certificate is awarded. During the course the students visit a trade show and seminar where they can purchase new equipment or materials and watch the newest techniques being demonstrated.

Work Experience: One weeks work experience is part of the course, but students will find that obtaining part time work within a salon or health farm during their course, as a junior will be a advantage. This could also help them find employment once they have completed their qualification.

Course Assessment: All Beauty therapy programmes are assessed through a combination of the following: Formative assessment on fellow students,summative assessment and observation of practical work on clients, written assessment, oral questioning, written assignments, Building a portfolio of evidence to be submitted for assessment by an internal and external verifier.

Progression: After qualifying, students can go on to further post graduate study in Remedial Massage, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, nail technolgy and makeup artistry. Alternatively students can find employment within the Industry in Salons, Health Farms, Spas, on board Cruise Liners, set up a self-employed business or work abroad.

Homework: Students should expect to dedicate approximately eight hours a week to home study including organising class notes and reading around the subject. College work must be put as a priority over part-time jobs.

Additional Costs: All students will be required to purchase a uniform (72.00 ), kit (20.00) and books costing 40.00. Course fees of 550 and examination fees may be payable for mature students over 19. All students if not currently registered with VTCT will aso need to pay the one off life time registration fee of 12.00.

Entry Requirement

Students need to hold a NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy or Beauty Specialist qualification, and four GCSEs at grades A-D to include English and Science or level 2 Key Skills. Students will be expected to pass a short theory test of their current knowledge and understanding and if required a practical trade test. As the course requires assignments to be written up, basic key board skills and access to a computer at home is essential. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is a mature attitude towards work.
