Biology AS/A2
Biology gets in to many areas of our life including food safety, agriculture, medicine, sport and scientific research.

This subject looks at the nature of life from the molecules and chemicals that life is built upon to the way populations of the world's living organisms develop and live together. You may wish to take Biology as part of a Science 'package', or combine it with a wide range of other subjects to broaden your experience. Biology can be taken alongside Arts and Humanities courses.

What will I study?
Biology is a very hands on subject. Regular practical work in class will form a part of your study of biological science. Your study will not involve the killing of animals solely for practical investigation, but will involve some dissection of animal and plant material.

AS: In the first year you will extend your GCSE knowledge of cells and develop an understanding of biochemistry, the basic chemicals of life and how they operate. You will also learn about physiology and transport systems in animals and plants and how they can go wrong and study areas including biodiversity, classification, evolution and conservation. If you are not studying AS Chemistry, you will need to work with your Biology teachers to cover the basic biochemistry needed for this course.

A2: The second year involves further study of central concepts of biology, including the role of energy in all living systems, the principles and processes of biotechnology and genetic engineering and physiological control systems and behavioural study.

How will I be assessed?
AS: A combination of written exams at the end of year one, plus a range of practical assessment tasks.

A2: A combination of written exams, plus a practical investigation.

What can I do next?
Biologists can be found in many places, including medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, veterinary medicine, laboratory work, forensics, pathology and nursing. Biology is also a well respected A level for a wide range of non-science related courses and careers because it helps you to develop analytical, practical and investigative skills.
