PROGRAMME CONTENT/STRUCTURE
The BTEC Diploma Foundation Studies Art and Design course is
designed to equip students with a relevant portfolio of artwork and the knowledge and experience required to progress onto and thrive on BA (Hons) Art and Design courses. Foundation Studies is an exciting course, divided into three main stages designed to enable students to identify their personal creative direction: Exploratory Stage, a broad-based exploration of materials, techniques and media and designed to build a solid skills base and conceptual connection with visual culture. The Pathway Stage is given over entirely to project work, portfolio preparation, UCAS application and the further development of skills and knowledge prior to Higher Education interview. A programme of Contextual Studies runs throughout these two stages and is an essential part of the Foundation course, allowing students to critically appreciate their own work in the context of contemporary and historical ideas. It also provides essential reference and resource material for project work. The course concludes with the Confirmatory Stage when students will be working on a major self initiated project, followed by external examination and a vibrant end-of-year public exhibition.

The specialist pathways offered include:

Fashion/Textiles;
Fine Art;
Graphic Visual Communication; and
3-Dimensional Design.

These pathways lead onto more focussed study including Architecture, Interior Design, Jewellery, Product Design, Furniture, Special Effects, Illustration, Animation, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Promotion, Textiles/Surface Design, Photography and Fine Art.

This course will run subject to amendment pending business conditions.
PROGRESSION/CAREERS OPPORTUNITIES
On completion students will have attained the experience, skills, confidence and discipline to progress onto and be successful on BA (Hons) courses in all fields of Art & Design.
