Level Two | The Centre for Rural and Equine Studies | Full-Time

Course Description
This one year course provides an opportunity for you to study a practical and comprehensive introduction to animal care. Visits to zoos and other animal centres are an integral part of the programme. You will also complete a period of work experience. The course includes an opportunity to work with a range of animals in the purpose built on-site animal unit, grooming room and in a range of venues away from campus. The course provides a balance of theory, animal handling, knowledge and work experience. This is an ideal programme of study (equivalent to GCSEs at grade C and above) that allows you to progress in levels of achievement, expertise and experience in a supportive and fun, educational environment.

Units of study include:
  • Animal Accommodation
  • Handling and Care
  • Animal Breeds and Grooming
  • Animal Care Industry and Organisations
  • Animal Health Welfare and Behaviour
  • Care of Exotic Animals
  • Introduction to Animal and Plant Biology

An integrated programme of the Key Skills of Literacy, Application of Number and ICT complements the vocational aspects of the course.

Additionally students may study NVQ Level 1 Animal Care as part of the course.

Career Progression

Employment in kennels, dog groomers, pet stores, animal centres or rescue centres
