About this course
An interview in which you show a current portfolio of work and meet one of the following requirements:
Minimum of grade D in GCSE Art and Design Subject and three GCSEs at grade A-E
A BTEC Foundation Certificate (or equivalent) in Art and Design at distinction

Course Description
This is a one year course which provides an introduction to basic principles of art, craft and design. You will study practical art and design skills such as drawing, painting, graphics and 3D Design. You will learn design processes and explore the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople. This course is primarily aimed at students who can demonstrate skills as well as a keen interest in art and design and who desire to study the subject full-time.
Course Content
The course is broken down into five subject areas:
- 3D Design
- Contextual Studies
- Graphics
- Observational and Design Drawing
- Visual Art
Course Length and Study Pattern
Course Structure
The course is made up of 6 units of work which will all be graded. Two of these units will form a final major project at the end of the course.
There are four core units:
2D and 3D Visual Communication, Contextual References in Art and Design, Explore and Develop Art and Design Ideas, Produce an Art and Design Outcome
Plus 2 specialist units:
Graphic Design Briefs, Working with Visual Arts Briefs.
(These units may be subject to change)
You will also study an additional short course in Textiles which consists of two units. This course is assessed through course work.
Key Skills are a compulsory part of the course.

With further training or study, students go into careers including: Advertising, Fashion/Textile Design, Graphic Design, Marketing, Interior Design, Photography
Work Experience
Work experience is not a compulsory part of the course but if you wish to undertake it as a part of your course it can be arranged.
Assessment
You will receive projects for each of the above topics and at the end of each project you will be assessed. All assessment is coursework based.
Trips and Enrichment Activities
There are regular day trips to Galleries and Museums.
