Course Content

The BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development is a one year full-time course aimed at students 16 years old and over, and on successful completion you will be awarded a Level 2 qualification. You will be given the opportunity to develop your skills and an understanding of working with children and young people aged between 0-16 years - knowledge of this age range will be gained through participation in a variety of subjects and work placements.

The course comprises of six units of study:
  • Communication with children & adults
  • Keeping children safe
  • Preparing & maintaining environments for childcare
  • Professional development roles & responsibilities in childcare
  • Supporting children's play & learning
  • Understanding children's development.

The main subjects are enhanced by further studies including Key Skills (Application of Number, Communication Skills and Information Computer Technology).

Method of Assessment

Assignments, Observation, Practical Tests, & Successfully Completed Placement.

Progression

Students who achieve Merit/Distinction profiles on all units plus a Level 2 in Skills for Life communications will have the opportunity for progression onto either the BTEC National Certificate in Children's Care, Learning & Development, or gain employment at Level 2 in any childcare setting.
