Why should I study BTEC First Diploma in Engineering?
The BTEC First Diploma is a 360 guided learning hour qualification which offers an opportunity for learners to experience a vocational qualification. The BTEC First Diploma offers a focused vocational qualification for learners who wish to follow a programme of study related to an aspect of employment that they might wish to move into. This will also enable learners to progress to a higher level qualification relevant to their chosen career:
- BTEC National Certificate
- EAL Advanced Diploma, or
- Directly into employment.
What will be studied on the course?
Learners will study the following units:
Core Units:
- Working Practices in Engineering
- Using and Interpreting Engineering Information
- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
- Applied Electrical and Mechanical Science for Technicians
Specialist units:
- Selecting Engineering Materials
- Using Computer Aided Drawing Techniques in Engineering
- Engineering Marking Out
- Application of Quality Control and Measurement in Engineering
- Workplace Organisation and Standard Operating Procedures
When does the course start and how long does it last?
This course starts in September and lasts for one academic year ending in June.
What qualifications are needed to do the course?
The students will need to have one of the following
- A Foundation GNVQ in Engineering

- Appropriate knowledge and or experience gained in an engineering job
- Engineering manufacturing NVQs at level 2 or experience appropriate for this level of study
Where is the course based?
The course is based at The Centre of Engineering Enterprise, Derwentside College (Main Campus) Consett.
How will the learner be assessed?
All units are assessed by practical and written assessments and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
How much will the course cost?
You may be asked to cover the cost of transport for any visits arranged throughout the course. Textbooks relating to the course are available for loan from our Learning Resource Centre as well as within the department. A scientific calculator is required and these can be purchased within the department for a small cost. Students must also provide their own stationery.
What progression routes are available?
A BTEC 1st Diploma in Engineering can develop the skills you need to start or progress a career in the following:
- Fabrication and welding
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
The qualification provides a good grounding to go on to more advanced careers and courses such as:
- Modern apprenticeships
- BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Engineering
