BTEC First Diploma in Forestry and Countryside Management
This is a practical, work-related course aimed at developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will be taught and assessed by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace demands, situations and activities.
Course modules include habitat conservation, trees and woodlands, practical forestry, estate skills and using machinery. The students will be educated bilingually by enthusiastic and experienced tutors and can make use of the excellent resources on site.
The qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grade A C. Upon successful completion of the course and a positive tutor report it is possible to progress on to the BTEC National Diploma.
Students can choose to study some modules of the First Diploma either full-time or part-time to gain a First Certificate qualification, which is equivalent to 2 GCSE A*-C.

What will I study?
This is a practical course designed for those about to leave school or school leavers who wish to undertake a course that will enable them to obtain work in the countryside. The course includes a short period of work experience. You will be taught on the College estate which is an ideal location for gaining practical experience of forestry and the countryside. You will study the units listed below. Mandatory units: Introduction to biology. Estate skills. Introduction to land-based industries. Work experience. Conservation of habitat. Machinery and workshop skills. Trees and woodland. Practical forestry.
Will I have to sit any examinations?
There will be no examinations. You will be assessed by means of practical work and a few assignments.
What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a First Diploma in Countryside and the Environment (Forestry). There will also be opportunities to gain additional certificates such as NVQ 1 or certificates in the short courses offered by the College.
What next?
Having passed the First Diploma course you will be able to follow a National Diploma course in Countryside Management, Forestry or Engineering or any other National Diploma course. Or you might decide to pursue a career in estate work with countryside organizations or to undertake contract work.
