About this course

This 1-year course offers you the opportunity to study computing (Systems Support) from both theoretical and practical applications. You will gain the knowledge and experience required enabling you to support and maintain computer systems. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 A level. Due to the structure of this course, on completion you will leave the College with 2 qualifications equivalent to 3 A-Levels, greatly enhancing your future opportunities.

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades G or above or a City & Guilds Level 1 in IT or Computing. You should also have a reasonable standard of English & Maths. Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include experience of paid and/or unpaid employment. In addition, you will be invited to attend an interview and undergo a Basic Skills Assessment.

What will I study?
You will study 6 BTEC units/modules, these will include: Core Units: Using ICT to Present Information; Introduction to Computer Systems. Other Units: ICT Project; Website Development; Networking Essentials; Providing ICT Technical Support and Guidance. You will also study Key Skills at an appropriate level in Communication, Application of Number & ICT. Basic Skills Support in literacy & numeracy is available where a need is identified. You will also be given the opportunity to study Sustainability & Community Development, Equal Opportunities & Entrepreneurship. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales ?fits in? with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in all units by completing set assignments, short reports and the completion of an Integrated Vocational Assignment (IVA). You will also be expected to maintain your course files and your Key Skills portfolios to the required standards.

Career Opportunities & Progression
After successful completion of this course you have the opportunity to seek employment as a Junior Helpdesk, Network or Systems Technician. Alternatively you can build on this qualification and progress onto a BTEC National for IT Practitioners course, which will further your future opportunities of employment.
