Course Description:
What is a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma?
The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport Performance, Coaching and Fitness is a qualification that is directly equivalent to one full A Level. The course supports government strategy in building successful sporting expertise which can contribute to the national status and profile of UK sport in Europe and the rest of the world.
The course is studied over one year. Successful students can progress on to a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the second year, which is equivalent to two full A Levels.
Who is the course for?
• For students wishing to pursue a career in P.E. teaching, coaching or sport development.
Course Content
Students study a total of seven units including:
• Principles of Anatomy and Physiology
• Fitness Training and Programming for Sport
• Assessing Risk in Sport
• Practical Individual Sport
• Physiology of Fitness
• Practical Team Sport
• Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

Entry Requirements:
• Pass grade on BTEC First Diploma Sport.
• Satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attitude to study and potential for development.
• Specific interest in pursuing a career within sport.
Assessment and Progression:
Assessment
The styles of assessment are a real strength of the programme, with the emphasis on coursework rather than exams, allowing students to achieve their full potential. There are a diverse range of methods used including written assignments, group work, laboratory reports, presentations, practical tests and simulations.
Grades are awarded on a Pass, Merit or Distinction basis, with commensurately higher UCAS points for each level.
Progression
The qualification provides a natural route into the BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance, Coaching and Fitness. Progression would then be to higher education courses such as Foundation Degrees and Honours Degrees in sport related disciplines. This progression will inevitably depend on your performance, with a distinction grade achieving 240 UCAS points. There are also opportunities to progress into employment in areas such as PE teaching, coaching, sport development and sport science support.
