BTEC National Diploma in Agricultural Engineering
This is a practical, work-related course aimed at developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will be taught and assessed by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace demands, situations and activities.
Course modules include diagnostic work, diesel injection systems, electrical systems, using machinery, harvesting machinery and business management. The students will be educated bilingually by enthusiastic and experienced tutors and can make use of the farm and engineering workshops excellent resources.
Visits and excursions are an essential part of students development on the course and there will be an opportunity to experience good practices and expand their horizons on visits to businesses throughout the UK, shows and international events and study trips. There will also be opportunities to gain additional qualifications while studying the course, such as Using a Forklift, Using Pesticides and Tractor Driving certificates.
The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels. Having successfully completed the course students can choose to progress to higher education with the necessary grades. Students can study some modules of the National Diploma either full-time or part-time to gain a Certificate or an Award qualification, which is equivalent to one or two A Levels.

What will I study?
You will learn how to use and maintain farm machinery and during the year you will study a number of units covering agricultural and engineering activities. Some 80% of the course will be practical and 20% theoretical. Some of the units you will study are: Driving a tractor. All terrain vehicles. Crop machinery. Mowers. Tractor maintenance. Health and safety. Farm workshop practice. Information technology. Welding. Farming equipment. Crop sowing equipment. Crop spraying equipment.
Will I have to sit any examinations?
There will be no examinations. Your work will be assessed by your tutors who will question you about your work and set an occasional written assignment.
What will I have at the end of the course?
Having completed the course successfully you will be awarded an OCN Certificate in Farm Engineering
What next?
Upon completion of the course you will be able to undertake a National Diploma or BAGMA NVQ Levels 2-3 course in Agricultural Service Engineering. Career options include farm contract work, farm work or farm equipment engineer.
