About this course

You will need an interview and a keen interest in Art and Design plus one of the following:
GCSE Grade A*-C in Art or a Design subject (Textiles, Graphics, or 3D Design) plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language
First Diploma (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject at Merit, plus a D in GCSE Art

Course Description
BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design (with Pathways in Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art and 3D Design) is a two year 18 unit course which is equivalent to three A Levels. The qualification offers the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for learners who wish to pursue careers in a broad range of areas in the creative industry. It is possible to achieve a maximum of 360 UCAS points depending on your final grade.

Course Content
The first year of the course allows you to experiment and become competent with a range of practical art and design disciplines including: 3D Design, Ceramics, Drawing Development, Fashion and Textiles, Fine Art, Graphics, Historical and Contextual Understanding, Illustration, Interior Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking.

In the second year of the course you will specialise in one of the pathways listed below. You will develop your skills further, whilst building a portfolio to progress to a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design or Higher Education.

The Specialist Pathways:

Fine Art:
  • Developing and Realising Fine Art Ideas
  • Generating Fine Art Ideas
  • Painting in Fine Art

Textiles and Fashion Pathway:
  • Extending Specialist Textile Techniques
  • Fabric Manipulation
  • Production Techniques for Fashion and Clothing

Graphic Design Pathway:
  • Graphics Media, Techniques and Technology
  • Information Graphics
  • Words and Images in Graphic Design

3D Design Pathway:
  • Developing and Realising Design Craft Ideas
  • Exploring Specialist Techniques
  • Small Scale Design

The course also includes Key Skills in Numeracy in the first year and Communication (integrated into Art History Assignments) in the second year. Depending on your GCSE results you might have to sit a test in either or both Communication and Numeracy.

GCSE Retakes:There is also the option of retaking either your GCSE Maths or English in the first year of this course.

Additional Qualifications During the course you will have the opportunity to study two additional courses, in the first year a BTEC Award in Graphics and in the second year a BTEC Award in Interative Use of Media that includes units in Computers in Art and Design and 3D Modelling. The purpose of this additional course is to provide you with further skills in Digital Media, but also supplementary material and evidence for your portfolio for university or employment.

Work Experience
Work experience is not a compulsory part of the course but if it is essential for an application to a HE course/employment (eg.architecture) it can be arranged. Students who specialise in graphic design will have the opportunity to work on live assignments delivered by local design businesses.

Assessment
You will be assessed through course work and written assignments. Assessment is carried out continuously through the first year and you will receive at the end of this year your grades for the first 9 units. In the second year you will be assessed in a further 9 units continuously through the year, 3 of these units form the final major project which is assessed through the end of year show. At the end of year two you will receive three final grades for the 18 unit qualification plus your UCAS point score.

Trips and Enrichment Activities
There are day trips to galleries and museums plus an optional trip to London in the first and second year.
