You must be at least 16 years of age on starting the course. You will normally need to have at least one of the following: a BTEC First Certificate/Diploma, or an Intermediate GNVQ, (these would need to be in a related subject), or at least four GCSEs at grades A*- C. You will be invited to attend an interview with a portfolio of your art/ design work.

BTEC National Diploma in Art & DesignCourse Outline
The National Diploma in Art & Design is a 2-year, three A level equivalent course. You are able to gain in skills and confidence within a supportive environment created by well-qualified and committed staff, as well as having access to excellent facilities and resources in a new purpose designed building at Nantgarw. The first part of the course offers you an opportunity to develop skills and visual awareness through a structured programme of drawing; painting and 3D work, with the emphasis on experimentation and exploration. The practical work is supported by a programme of Contextual Studies, enabling you to understand the place of art, craft and design in history and contemporary society. Regular visits to museums and galleries are undertaken. The course introduces a range of art and design disciplines, which enables you to make a choice of a specialist pathway.

You must be at least 16 years of age on starting the course. You will be invited to attend an interview with a portfolio of your art/ design work.

What will I study?
The course is made up of eighteen units - five core units, which everyone takes, and thirteen specialist units. There are 3 pathways offered within the course: Graphic Arts which covers graphic design, photography, Illustration, painting and printmaking. Fashion & Textiles which covers pattern construction and production techniques, surface pattern, fabric manipulation, paper & printmaking in textiles and costume design & construction. 3D Design, which includes furniture, product, interior & theatre design, graphic presentation techniques and design craft techniques.

How will I be assessed?
All units are assessed and graded, with an overall grade for the qualification awarded.

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and Higher Education institutes, (universities and colleges). After successful completion of this course you could further your studies with a Degree in subjects such as: 3D Design, Fashion & Textiles, Animation, Graphic Design, Multimedia or Photography.
