This is a practical, work-related course aimed at developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will be taught and assessed by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace demands, situations and activities. Course modules include plant and soil science, estate skills, business planning, silviculture, sporting woodands, forest and woodland management, forestry skills, wildlife management, ecology and conservation and sustainable development.
The students will be educated bilingually by enthusiastic and experienced tutors and can make use of the excellent resources on site. Visits and excursions are an essential part of students development on the course and there will be an opportunity to experience good practices and expand their horizons on visits to the industry and study trips.
There will also be opportunities to gain additional qualifications while studying the course, such as Using a Chainsaw and Using Pesticides certificates.
The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels. Having successfully completed the course students can choose to progress to higher education with the necessary grades.
Students can study some modules of the National Diploma either full-time or part-time to gain a Certificate or an Award qualification, which is equivalent to 1 or 2 A Levels.

What will I need to follow the course?

* 4 GCSE Grade A*-C. Emphasis is placed on core subjects: Languages, Maths and Science,
* BTEC First Diploma, as well as an encouraging report by the tutor.

What will I study?
You will learn the principles and practice of countryside management and have opportunities to develop a number of practical skills which will help you to pursue a career in this field. In order to gain the National Diploma, you must study all the units listed below. In order to gain the National Certificate, you will only have to study some of them. Mandatory units: Specialist Project Business Management Environmental Science Principles of Plant and Soil Science Ecology and Conservation Estate Skills Industry Experience Agriculture and the Environment Environmental Issues and Policies Pollution Sustainable Development Ecology of Trees, Forest and Woodland Grassland Habitat Management Forest Woodland Management Countryside Policies and Recreation

Will I have to sit any examinations?
There are no examinations. You will be assessed via assignments and practical work.

What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the National Certificate or National Diploma in Countryside Management. There will also be opportunities to gain additional certificates such as NVQ 1 and 2 or certificates in the short courses offered by the College.

What next?
Having been awarded the National Certificate in Countryside Management you will be able to study for the National Diploma or to seek employment in this area. You will be able to use the National Diploma to progress to an advanced course such as an HND or a BSc in Countryside Management or an HND or BA/BSc in Environmental Studies. The qualification can open the door to careers in estate work with countryside organizations, contract work or supervisory work.
