BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development Fitness Pathway)
A BTEC National Diploma is a vocational based course. It is based on the sports industry and provides students with an opportunity to gain an insight into the wide and diverse nature of this growing sector. The course retains a strong academic base, whilst including practical units and modules and is approximately 75% theory and 25% practical. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen you develop the skills you need to start a career. The qualification is equivalent to three A Levels, which means that on completion of the course you can either choose to go into employment or onto higher education. This course is ideally suited for those with a genuine interest in sport and related activities, but who also have the ability and determination to succeed on this academic course. Students will develop both knowledge and understanding of the sports industry as well as develop important practical and organisational skills to support their progression.

The course is made up of 18 units Body in Action Health & Safety in Sport Training and Fitness for Sport Sports Coaching Sports Development Fitness Testing Practical Team Sports Practical Individual Sports Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Sport and Society Leadership in Sport Exercise, Health and Lifestyle Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise Psychology for Sports Performance Sports Injuries Sport and Exercise Massage Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport Organising Sports Events
Each of the 18 units will have between 3 5 assignments. These assignments may be reports, presentations, practical assessments or research projects. Each assignment will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level and contributes to the unit and overall course grades, which could be PPP MMM, DDD for each A level equivalent or a mixed profile, eg. PMM etc.
On successful completion of this course students may progress directly into their chosen area of the sports industry or progress onto higher education. Students from this course have progressed directly into the industry and are now to be found employed in related health and fitness roles, including sports coaching, sport and leisure management and others. Those progressing to University have gone onto join the teaching and sports development professions, sports coaching and instructing as well as sports therapy and teaching at infant and primary level. Many students are taking the opportunity to progress to one of the local universities offering a wide range of sport based courses, these include Chichester, Winchester, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Southampton Solent University.
All students will study the valuable Key Skills of Communication, Application of Number and IT, gaining an additional qualification valued by employers and higher education establishments. All students will complete the wider key skill Improving Own Learning. The course offers the dedicated student a wealth of opportunities and experiences. Additional qualifications may be taken alongside this course, such as a range of coaching awards, industry related awards and the sports academy Students must be prepared to apply academic as well as practical sports skills. Students are encouraged to take a full and active part in college life.
Students from such courses have progressed from Eastleigh College into industry, employment and onto higher education for a number of years with great success.
