Is the course for me?
This course provides practical skills in food preparation & cooking and food service in our purpose built kitchens and Buckley's restaurant. It would be suitable to anyone who is interested in woking in the Catering and Hospitality sector, as a chef, caterer or restauranteur. It is hands on and gives you a real taste of working in the industry. It is the perfect platform for you to progress on to the Catering and Hospitality Level 2 course.

What will I learn?
You will be part of the kitchen team which services the college Crescent cafeteria for both staff and students. You will also work in Buckley's as part of the front of house team serving members of the public in our new purpose built restaurant. Training will be a mix of both practical and theory based lessons covering food preparation, safety, hygiene and temwork. You will learn to cook in a professional environment supported by a team of experienced tutours. You will make a variety of items: simple soups, vegetable dishes and you will have the opportunity to design your own sanwiches and prepare simple salads and fruit desserts. All these skills will give you confidence and enable you to either progress to the next level or obtain your first position in the industry.

How will I be assessed?
For your NVQ your competence will be assessed by observation from course tutors and you will complete a portfolio of evidence and complete answers to written questions as well as some on-line unit testing. For your BTEC Certificate you will complete some written assignments and projects. You will also complete a programme of key skills in IT and communications.

What can I do after the course?
Ideally, you would progress onto the Level 2 programme in doing so you would increase your skills potential earnings in just 34 weeks. There are good job prospects in the Catering & Hospitality industry in both the Restaurant and kitchen at a junior level.
