Chemistry AS/A2
This course will appeal to students who have an interest in finding out how the world works, and enjoy practical science and problem solving. You may wish to specialise in Chemistry at a higher level, or broaden your studies to include a scientific subject. Chemistry allows you to learn more about the structure of the world around you through experiment, and find out about the chemical reactions that we encounter every day, whether it be in breathing, baking or driving a car.
What will I study?
The course covers a wide range of topics and allows you to build on the skills and abilities gained at GCSE Science. It involves a number of practical exercises which are assessed and contribute to the final mark.
AS: The first year of the course introduces the structure of atoms, molecules, chemical bonding and the periodic table. You will learn about organic chemistry, including the important chemicals produced from oil and the role of chemists in developing fuels and combating pollution. There is a further module covering chemical reactions, and how these are affected by different conditions.
A2: The second year builds on the AS year, allowing you look in more detail at the way in which organic chemistry shapes the natural world and develop your knowledge of periodicity and inorganic chemistry. You will also learn about the physical chemistry that supports the rest of the course.
If you want to develop advanced level Maths skills alongside Chemistry, but don't want to study a full Maths A Level, why not think about adding a Free Standing Maths Unit to your programme?
How will I be assessed?
AS: A combination of two written exams and practical investigative work.
A2: A combination of two written exams and practical investigative work.
What can I do next?
Chemistry develops lots of skills that are relevant for employment or study at a higher level, such as problem solving, scientific method, practical work and use of number.
Chemistry is essential if you want to study Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Forensic Science or Veterinary Science at a higher level. Combined with a range of other subjects it is also a valuable qualification for other courses and occupations.
