Course description
Who can join?
This course has been designed to be an ideal introduction to study for anyone who is thinking of taking up employment, or going on to further study, in the Child, Health or Social Care fields.

Applicants should be at least 16 years of age and have a minimum of 5 Standard Grades at level 4 and above.

Mature students are welcome to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

How do I attend?
The course starts in August each year, and students may study full time for 36 weeks or part time over a longer period, either at The NHC-Thurso or The NHC-Alness.

What will I study?
You will have the opportunity to study a range of subjects such as Care, Early Education & Child Care, Psychology and Biology. You will also develop your core skills by studying IT, Numeracy and Communications. Your course work will also include work placements which will develop your vocational and employability skills. Preactical skills for Caring and Citizenship will also be developed.

  • Sociology for Care (Intermediate 2)
  • Values and Principles in Care (Intermediate 2)
  • Child Development and Health: an introduction (Intermediate 2)
  • Play in Early Education and Childcare (Intermediate 2)
  • Working in Early Education and Childcare (Intermediate 2)
  • Child Protection: an introduction (Intermediate 2)
  • Care and Feeding of Children (Intermediate 2)
  • HIV Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Infections (Intermediate 2)
You should select 3 of the following to make up the required 3 credits. You may complete these at either Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 level or you could choose 2 of these unitsplusthe Intermediate 2 Care exam:
  • Numeracy (Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2)
  • Communication (Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2)
  • Information Technology (Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2)
  • Intermediate 2 Care Examination
What could I do next?
There are a number of different routes open to you. For instance it is possible to tailor your course of study so that you are able to gain the qualifications necessary for application to nurse training or to progress to the NC in Early Education and Childcare, NC Health and Social Care or SVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Children's Care Learning and Development or in Health and Social Care

How do I join?
Course Fees for Part Time Students

The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.

You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.

It is possible to use a current Individual Learning Account (ILA200) to pay for these units as you come to study them.
