Construction First Diploma
This course introduces students to the construction industry in the form of a practical, vocational programme that aims to provide the foundation of skills, knowledge and understanding required for progression to work, an apprenticeship or, most commonly, a level 3 qualification such as a BTEC National Diploma in Construction. It is principally aimed at young people without practical experience of the construction industry, who may fall below the GCSE grade requirements for a level 3 qualification. It is ideal for those that have a strong interest in entering the construction industry but are uncertain which career path to follow, as it provides the opportunity to study units relating to both technician and craft occupations (as detailed below).

Course Content:
The course is made up of six units, each focusing on a particular subject relating to the construction field. All students take three core units that provide a foundation of knowledge on which to build. In addition to these, students take three specialist units that offer the opportunity to study a particular area of construction in more depth. The subjects of these specialist units will be dependent on which of two pathways Technician or Investigating crafts - is followed. Core Units: The following units are compulsory for all students:

  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Investigating health, safety and welfare
  • Construction science and mathematics
  • Specialist units
  • Students will take an additional three units from either of the following two pathways: Technician pathway:

    • Construction processes and operations
    • Construction methods and techniques
    • Construction drawing techniques

    Investigating crafts pathway:

    • Carpentry and joinery
    • Trowel operations
    • Painting and decorating

    Awarding body:
    Edexcel.
    Attendance Requirements:
    Full-time. Details regarding expected course timetable and attendance will be given at interview, if available.

    Entry Requirements:
    Applicants should have one of the following:

      Assessment:
      Students will be set projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. All units are assessed and graded in this way, and an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the qualification is awarded.

      Progression Routes:
      Successful students are advised to embark on further study, with options ranging from the College's programme of construction craft courses to the more technical BTEC National Diplomas or Certificates in Construction and Engineering.

      Career Options:
      With further training or study, the course can provide a springboard for progression to careers in construction such as architectural design, surveying, carpentry & joinery, brickwork, site technician and painting & decorating.
