Course Summary:
The entry level Construction Skills courses at Nescot College will give you the chance to gain skills and a qualification in different practical subjects before moving on to the next level in the subject you like most.

You will also study core units that underpin the vocational subjects including separate qualifications in Adult Basic Skills Numeracy and Literacy.

The course is suitable for you if you have not taken GCSEs, have mild/moderate learning difficulties or behavioural problems or achieved very low results in your GCSEs.

Course Details:
The full time course covers the specialist areas of Painting and Decorating, Construction and Carpentry. You will also study the core unit of Preparing for Work. You will be expected to take part in work experience and may receive a certificate through the Millennium Volunteers.

Assessment is by a variety of methods including photographic, video, written work, group discussion, 1:1 discussion, role play and observed evidence. Assessment is not carried out at specific intervals but when you have agreed a time with your assessor.

There may also be an opportunity to try out other specialist skills throughout the course.

Career Progression:
At the end of the course you can progress to the next entry level and if successful at level 3 then NVQ 1 or foundation courses in the area you have enjoyed the most.

Other Information:
Additional support is provided in every class.

Group sizes are no more than eight in number.

You are expected to take part in the Millennium Volunteers scheme and enrichment activities.

It is a very practical course so expect to get wet, cold and dirty on occasions. You will have to purchase your own steel toe capped boots and overalls to wear when doing practical work. Protective equipment to comply with health and safety regulations will be supplied by the college.
