Design and Technology - AS & A Level
On this course you will learn about the processes of product design and manufacturing in industry. You will get a chance to improve your design skills and to use computer aided design systems. You will also get a chance to study/produce work in one area of your choice, such as graphics, resistants, textiles/fashion or electronic products. As well as the entry requirements listed, GCSE Art would be desirable but not essential.

You will be expected to have 5 GCSEs Grade A-C, including Design and Technology (Graphic Products, Textiles, Resistant Materials). Entry requirements may be different for adults.

What will I study?
The course is an introduction to the field of design and manufacturing technology. You will have the opportunity to develop your design and making skills through a series of projects. You will also be able to use computerised design systems (CAD/CAM), and will have opportunities to experience Design and Technology in industrial context through a week of work experience. Educational visits to exhibitions and some foreign trips may also be arranged.

Will I have to sit any examinations?
There will be one examination at the end of the year but most of your assessment will be based on your coursework, design and make tasks and a report on work experience.

What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the first year of the course, you will be awarded an AS certificate in Design and Technology. If you decide to study the subject further, at the end of the second year you will be awarded an A level qualification. In the second year you will study the area of Design and Technology in greater depth, but will spend a considerable amount of time on one major project.

What next?
You will be able to progress to courses such as art and design foundation courses, university degree courses, or HND. This is an excellent course for anyone interested in a career in teaching, industrial product design, engineering, architecture, etc.
