Course programme
The nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that candidates will need literacy and numeracy skills: i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks and to write answers in a legible and understandable form. Candidates will also need to be able to organize written information clearly and coherently, although they will not be assessed for spelling or grammatical accuracy, unless this is part of the assessment criteria. An ability to understand and carry out exact instructions is essential due to the nature of the activities. The selection procedure for all students will be by interview, satisfactory reference and successful completion of an initial aptitude test. If the above is completed satisfactorily, candidates may be offered a place on the Entry 3, Level 1 or Level 2 full time programme. At all levels, achievement will result from Progression onto the next level will depend upon your exam/portfolio results and behaviour throughout the academic year. One year on a full time basis for each level Students on a full-time course of 12.5 hours a week who are aged below 19 on 31 August are entitled to free tuition and no exam fees provided they are European Union Citizens. Students who are currently in Year 11 and will be aged over 16 on 31 August may be entitled to an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) paying up to £30 per week (subject to change). Mature students who are in receipt of certain benefits may be entitled to full or partial remission of fees. The regulations on student finance are detailed and subject to change. It is then expected that students will progress to working (under close supervision) on road going vehicles.
Course Content
Diploma in Automotive Engineering Entry Level (formerly known as 'Change Up')
There are approximately 15 hours of study per week, with an emphasis on practical activities. Included are 3 hours Functional Skills and 2 hours Personal Development. Students will study Vehicle Maintenance and practical skills. This course runs for one year on a full time basis.
Diploma in Automotive Engineering Level 1 (formerly known as Auto Technician Practical Programme)
This course runs on a full time basis for one year and attendance is required throughout the week. Dependant on course options, there are approximately 20 hours of formal study, approximating to 10 MV Maintenance and Repair, 7 Vehicle Body Work, 2 Key Skills and 1 Tutorial.
Diploma in Automotive Engineering Level 2 (formerly known as Auto Technician Practical Programme Level 2)
The qualification results from achievement of mandatory and 2 optional vocational units and all of the associated exams. Functional Skills is an integral component of the framework. This programme runs on a full time basis for one year.
